Do Oklahomans Want A Public Healthcare Option?

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll found that 72 percent of Americans favor some type of government-run health insurance program that would be available to everyone.
As part of his healthcare reform initiative, President Barack Obama has argued a public option for health insurance would make insurance companies compete for business and keep them “honest.”
Critics of the plan contend such a program would lead to single-payer, government-run healthcare based on the Canadian and European model. The U.S. currently spends more money than any other industrial country on healthcare and has worse medical outcomes than most of these nations.
The country has spoken in the poll. What do Oklahomans want? Oklahoma consistently ranks low compared to other states in healthcare studies and medical access. Anywhere from 600,000 to 700,000 Oklahomans are uninsured depending on particular studies.
